Understand a difference and choose one change
You can take a need seriously without agreeing to every behavior.
Consider context
Different preferences and outside pressures can affect what a moment means. Ask about relevant context rather than assuming laziness, rejection, or a fixed personality. IBCT combines emotional acceptance with practical behavior change.
Words to try
“We seem to need different amounts of quiet after work. Could we try a check-in after we have both settled?”
Make the change concrete
Choose one action you can try, with room for the other person to say what fits. Revisit the experiment without scoring the relationship. An understandable difference is not proof of incompatibility.
Acceptance has limits
Acceptance does not mean tolerating harm, control, or disrespecting a clear boundary. This original reflection uses an IBCT principle; it is not IBCT treatment or an assessment.
